The employees you encounter there often fall under the general category of warehouse worker. But what they do is often varied and versatile. As a warehouse worker, you can, for example, collect orders, sort, load and unload, or work on the forklift.
What does a warehouse worker do?
As a warehouse worker, you will work in the logistics sector and work in a warehouse or storage facility where all products or packages are stored. It varies per company what exactly you will do. Often there are at least two separate sections: the goods receipt department and the outgoing goods department.
You may scan and sort packages. This can be done, for example, at GLS, PostNL or DHL. All the products we order on webshops arrive here and are sorted, this work is often called order picking and you then work as an order picker. Once everything is sorted, the delivery drivers can easily deliver the packages.
At companies that have their own warehouse, you will collect all orders for different customers of the client you work for. Think, for example, of Bidfood which supplies food and drinks to, for example, restaurants. Or Wehkamp, the online department store where many orders are placed daily by everyone. You collect these orders based on order lists, sometimes you receive this through a headset and confirm it when you have picked the products. In some companies, you may also pack smaller consumer orders. Usually, you can also work in this company as a forklift driver or reach truck driver.
In some companies, it happens that you then load and unload the orders or packages into the trucks, but often there is a separate team for this. The truck drivers then deliver the orders to the customers. More information about the work of a driver or courier can be found here.
Logistics work can be very diverse, but it is often heavier work, you must be able to handle this well. As a warehouse worker, you are responsible for the customers' orders. It is important that you behave responsibly, work accurately, but also can handle time pressure. Furthermore, it is important that you can work in a team: together with your colleagues, you are responsible for ensuring that everything is ready on time.
