A team leader is a supervisor on the work floor who manages a team. It is a fun position if you already have some experience and want to grow further.
Instead of a team leader, you can also become a (working) foreman (m/f). You are then the right hand of the team leader and manage the team in the absence of the team leader or when they are not on the work floor.
What does a team leader do?
As a team leader, you can work in different sectors. Here, we mainly explain the work in the production and logistics sector.
As a team leader, you are responsible for managing a specific team or department in a company. It depends on the size of the company and the underlying departments whether you have many fellow team leaders or are the only one in your position.
You hire new people and are the one who conducts performance reviews and guides employees in their careers. You are the first point of contact for employees; if something is going on, they can come to you. These can be personal matters, but also if something happens on the floor. Regarding the latter: it is up to you to ensure that everyone adheres to the safety and company regulations.
As a team leader, you regularly communicate with higher management and discuss the achieved results, any risks, and come up with improvement proposals. These improvement proposals relate to planning, work performed, hours worked, leave, and absenteeism.

How do you become a team leader?
To become a team leader, you often need some work experience in the sector you are going to work in. Additionally, it is important that you can manage people and lead a team. Furthermore, you have a responsible role, you must monitor the work process and progress and be able to report to your supervisor. It is also useful if you have a good dose of people skills.
If you do not yet qualify for the position of team leader, you can often start as a (working) foreman (m/f) and grow from there into a position as a team leader.
What does a team leader earn on average?
The salary of a team leader depends on the industry and the company you are going to work for. The starting salary of a team leader is around 2500 euros gross per month and can rise to 3300 euros gross per month. Please note: this is purely indicative. The salary is determined based on your experience and the responsibilities you have.

There will always be work for team leaders, almost every company needs a manager in operations. Often you can grow from another position within the company and become a team leader.
