Press release: holidays not the time for appreciation
With the holidays approaching, Timing Uitzendteam asked more than 1300 temporary workers what the right time of year is for managers to express their appreciation towards staff. It turns out that 85% do not label the holidays as the most suitable moment. This is remarkable because for employers, the holidays are often a very logical time to thank and highlight employees.
Timing asked in the study âAppreciation for temporary workersâ when respondents would like to receive appreciation from their managers. No less than 85% of the temporary workers indicate that they prefer to receive it at any random time of the year. Only 5% mention the holidays as a reason.
Paul Haarhuis, commercial director of Timing: âThe response from temporary workers shows that appreciation is important, but it must be sincere. The holidays are often a logical time to thank staff for their efforts that year. Staff would rather receive appreciation at other relevant times. For example, during a very busy period or after completing an important or difficult project.â
Receiving compliments and opportunities
Timing also asked temporary workers in what form they prefer to receive appreciation. 55% prefer to receive a compliment. In second place, with 26%, is receiving an opportunity. âEmployees appreciate knowing that they are seen and that there is appreciation for who they are and what they do,â explains occupational psychologist Ellen Huijsmans. She also understands why receiving opportunities is a strong second. âGetting a chance to grow, for example by taking an internal course or obtaining a certificate, is an extra confirmation of appreciation and is experienced as an indirect compliment,â says Huijsmans.
Appreciation for temporary workers
About two million people perform operational work in the Netherlands every day. They are the engine of our society. Timing wants to elevate appreciation for temporary workers to a higher level and draw more attention to the people behind operational work. Timing does this by collecting and sharing various stories of temporary workers.
