Do you enjoy helping people and can you switch quickly? Then become a call center employee.

Working as a call center employee

You can distinguish call center employees in two different roles; inbound and outbound.
Inbound means incoming calls and involves being called by customers, often referred to as customer service representative. More information about this can be found on this page [customer service role link].
As an outbound call center employee, you are the one who calls the customers. On this page, we will delve further into that.

What does a call center employee do?

As an outbound call center employee, you usually work for an organization that calls on behalf of various clients, as is the case at Concentrix. You are usually trained for a specific project of one of the clients. Clients are often large commercial organizations, such as telecom companies, that want to increase brand awareness or offer a product or service.

In the first weeks, you will be well trained, often first listening in on conversations with a colleague a few times. Based on a call script, you call the (potential) customers and ask if there is interest in the client's product or service.

It is often thought that you have to sell products over the phone all day, but that is certainly not always the case. Usually, you try to find out through a pleasant conversation whether there is interest from the customer, and you do this by asking good questions. If you notice there is interest, then you have a lead, as it is called. If you have a lead, the account manager often takes it further with the customer.

It is also important that you always check the customer's details carefully and verify that everything is correct. You may need to make adjustments. Therefore, it is also important that you are strong in written communication and work accurately.

How do you become a call center employee?

To start working as a call center employee, you usually don't need any education. They may ask for some experience for more complex roles, but that won't be a strict requirement. The most important thing is that you are not afraid to make calls, are communicatively strong, have a smooth talk, and are commercially minded. Often, you work with certain targets (goals), and you must be able to handle this.

If you enjoy eventually becoming an account manager or moving towards sales, then working as a call center employee is often a good foundation where you learn a lot. Call center roles can often be performed both full-time and part-time. In some cases, work is also done in the evenings, making it easy to combine with, for example, studies. The advantage is that you can learn a lot from this role, which will benefit you in other positions later on.

What does a call center employee earn on average?

The salary is often around €1700 and €2300 gross per month for a 40-hour workweek. In some roles, bonuses are offered, for example, if you have scored a lead or customer. Your income can increase nicely thanks to these bonuses.

What is the career perspective of a call center employee?

There will always be vacancies for call center employees, and there are also great opportunities for advancement, such as becoming a supervisor. As a supervisor, you are the team leader and ensure, among other things, that everyone meets the targets and that the quality of the conversations is good.

Furthermore, it is also a good foundation if you want to move towards sales. Think, for example, of a position as an account manager, sales employee, or recruiter. As a call center employee, you will have a good foundation and will have already learned many of the required skills.
