Area Reiniging & Timing
Ten frontrunners who walk a route of 20 to 25 kilometers five days a week. Together with Area, collector of raw materials and waste in the municipality of Emmen, we experienced firsthand that work can also be too heavy. How did that go and what did it bring us? You can read that here.
The municipality of Emmen, progressive in its sustainability policy, asked Area for help. To keep waste collection efficient and affordable, the municipality rewards proper waste separation. To assist residents with this, they asked Area to deploy frontrunners. As a regular partner of Area, we were allowed to recruit these frontrunners.
Needed: a team of ten frontrunners
For Area, we went out to find employees who would check the contents of offered containers on the waste collection route in advance for 2 to 3 months. In the case of improperly separated waste, the frontrunner label the container with an action to be taken by the resident. This is meant to create awareness among the residents. Recruiting proved to be quite a challenge.
Challenge too big?
At the start, we had recruited a nice team with enthusiastic frontrunners. We were just two frontrunners short on the first day. We solved that ourselves. Since the plan was already to walk along for a day out of curiosity about what this new work entailed, Timing colleagues Melanie and Bram decided to do this on the very first day. This way, they filled the gap in the schedule themselves. This worked out well: Area was helped, and the project got off to a good start thanks to the enthusiasm of all involved.
Valuable practical experience
By walking along themselves, Melanie and Bram got a clear picture of the work. It brought valuable new insights. Melanie, customer manager for Area at Timing: “The work of frontrunners was new to us. “Walking a route of 20 to 25 kilometers five days a week is really too much to ask. Fortunately, we discovered this at an early stage and were able to share it with Area. Area then divided the tasks. Frontrunners now walked a maximum of three half days and could then do other, less physical work. For example, assembling organic waste bins for residents of apartment buildings and flats.”

Area: “The pioneer project has brought us nice, positive reactions from residents. By being personally present and engaging in conversation with the residents, we have been able to put Area on the map and represent it on the street. We notice that residents are now much more aware of separating their waste. Additionally, there is a good foundation for similar projects in the future.”
