Working as an Office Manager

An Office Manager is the person who manages various diverse matters in a department or organization so that other employees can focus on their own tasks.

What does an Office Manager do?

As an Office Manager, you are the main point of contact within the company for everyone. A reliable and flexible colleague who ensures that daily operations run smoothly. It is a very versatile profession because your tasks can vary significantly in content and level depending on the employer. Generally, Office Managers spend a considerable part of their time on secretarial tasks, just as many secretaries regularly perform office management tasks.

Often, it involves administrative tasks. Think of processing documents, mail, maintaining and managing calendars, and answering and forwarding incoming inquiries.

But also supportive tasks in the areas of facilities, finance, or HR are common. Such as managing office supplies, spaces, and equipment, processing invoices, doing the bookkeeping, welcoming new colleagues, and organizing staff events and attentions. You may also be asked to perform commercial tasks such as maintaining customer files and organizing acquisition activities.

How do you become an Office Manager?

Because as an Office Manager you are often the face of the company and perform many administrative and communication tasks, employers usually require at least an MBO education. The training to become a secretary is a good foundation. A good command of the Dutch language is often a must.
If it is part of your duties to also lead, a (shortened) HBO education is often necessary. Do you want to retrain as an Office Manager? Then there are often (paid) opportunities that employers offer. Also take a look at our training programs.

What does an Office Manager earn?

The salary of an Office Manager ranges between 2500 and 2700 euros gross per month for a 40-hour workweek. What you earn as an Office Manager depends on the sector you work in, the content of your tasks, and the experience you bring. You can earn a better salary as an Office Manager by taking on more responsibility and advancing to a managerial position.

What is the career perspective of an Office Manager?

Now that it is becoming more common to work from places other than just the office, the role of Office Manager has become increasingly important. The chance of getting a job as an Office Manager is therefore good.
