What does a sales assistant do? 

As a sales assistant, you are the first point of contact for customers who come in, usually working in Retail at stores like ANWB, Bever and Hornbach. You usually work with a team.

You advise customers about the products being sold. Depending on how large the store is, this can also be in a specific department, such as the garden department of Hornbach. Often, as a sales assistant, you are not only responsible for advising and assisting customers. Depending on the store, you may also be responsible for cashier duties, processing payments for products. Restocking the store inventory and processing incoming shipments of products can also be part of your tasks. Keeping the store tidy is often part of your duties as a sales assistant.

Usually, tasks are divided among the team at the start of the day, or as often happens in large companies, everyone has their own fixed responsibility. Together with your team, you are responsible for achieving the sales targets. Helping customers promptly and efficiently is important for this.

How do you become a sales employee?  

You don't need special training to become a sales employee. However, there are courses that prepare you well, such as the MBO course in retail or sales employee. If you want to become a sales employee, it is important that you enjoy working with customers and don't mind standing all day. You must be strong both physically and mentally. 

 

What does a sales employee earn on average? 

The salary of a sales employee is approximately between 1700 and 2300 euros gross per month when you work full-time. Your exact salary depends on your age, work experience, and the amount of responsibilities you receive.  

As a sales employee, you can often choose whether you want to work full-time or part-time. The work is also often offered as a side job. Because most stores are now open 7 days a week and have (extra) shopping evenings, it is important that you are flexible and don't mind working on weekends, evenings, and holidays. As a result, you often receive attractive bonuses on top of your salary. 

 

What is the career perspective of a sales employee?  

As a sales employee, there are plenty of growth opportunities and the chance of employment is also very good. People with sales talent or experience are in high demand by employers.  
When you perform well, you can advance to, for example, assistant store manager and then to store manager or regional manager.
